THE BUNNELL FAMILIES
IN
TIOGA COUNTY, NEW YORK

In January 1797 John and Hannah Bunnell left the relative civilization of Pennsylvania for the wilds of Tioga County. They purchased 100 acres of land that month in Park Settlement, Candor Township, part of the first group of settlers there.

Tioga County’s first settlers arrived in 1785[1]. In 1794, John Watkins and Royal Flint completed the purchase of nearly 400,000 acres of land that included what is now the town of Candor[2]. Three years later, Park Settlement in Candor was first settled[3]. John and Hannah Bunnell were among those first pioneer families. Mary (Bunnell) Bensley and Mansfield Bunnell, members of other branches of the Bunnell family tree, also moved into Tioga County as settlers and they are described in this document.

Many Bunnell family members were born and have lived and died in Tioga County. However Americans seem to have always been a people on the move. First as immigrants, then as pioneers and settlers pushing into unexplored territories. By 1790, with the fifth generation born in The New World reaching adulthood, this Bunnell family line had already moved from England to Massachusetts to Connecticut, thence to New Jersey, into Pennsylvania, and finally, with at least the family described here, into Tioga County, NY. And for many of the family members, the pattern continued into the 19th and 20th centuries, with a few relocating outside of the county and others relocating outside of New York State.

This document is an attempt to bring together within one source, all available information regarding the Bunnell families in Tioga County, New York. This is a living document and will be updated as I gather new information or analyze the information I already have. While I would prefer publishing it all at one time, I’m not sure it would ever see print if I waited until all the information was ready.

Each family member biography is written in such a way as to allow casual reading. Sources, and discussions regarding alternative data interpretation, are contained in the footnotes. Thus, the main body contains this compiler’s interpretation of the various data.
